Whole School Reading strategy

At Lostwithiel School we put reading at the heart of all we do. We recognise that developing children’s discrete word-reading skills and comprehension go hand in hand with the need to foster their love of books and reading. These two elements are intertwined; each relies on the other if children are to become life-long readers.

Maintaining our high attainment and progress in reading is a top priority for the leaders and governors at our school. Our attainment in phonics and KS1 is strong and our reading in KS2 was in the top 20% nationally in 2019!
Being able to read well is a key life skill. We build time for all children to read independently, read aloud and be read to during the school day. We have developed a coherent whole-school strategy for promoting reading for pleasure and spend money and time to support reading, including buying books and developing the school environment to support reading. We believe that every teacher should be an advocate for reading and devote time to training staff so they are equipped to support children’s enjoyment of reading.
