Science at Lostwithiel School

Science Curriculum Intent

Here at Lostwithiel School, we recognise the importance of Science in every aspect of daily life. As one of the core subjects, we give the teaching and learning of Science the importance it requires. We teach the disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics through explicit teaching of the National Curriculum. Specific content is planned by teachers and organised into knowledge organisers, detailing the precise vocabulary and knowledge to be taught in each year group. Throughout the programmes of study, the children will acquire and develop the key knowledge that has been identified within each unit and across each year group, as well as the application of scientific skills. We ensure that the 'Working Scientifically' skills are built-on and developed throughout a child’s time at school so that they can apply their knowledge of science when using equipment, conducting experiments and explaining concepts confidently and continue to ask questions and be curious about their surroundings. Through doing this, the children will develop their scientific knowledge as well as conceptual understanding which will allow them to apply their learning to other areas of science, the curriculum and real life learning. It will develop the natural curiosity of the child, encourage respect for living organisms and the physical environment and provide opportunities for critical evaluation of evidence. Children will develop their understanding of the nature, processes and methods of scientific study which will enable them to question the world around them and understand the science which underpins everyday life. Children will be equipped with the scientific understanding of the uses and implications of science today and in the future.
